Birth*1755Scotland, John Bethel, born 1755, "near AtholeCastle in the Highlands of Scotland" son of John and nacy (Stephenson) Bethel, grew up in the north of Ireland, where his father leased a large estate. John with his younger brother, Thomas, was pressed into the British Navy some time before 1800 and after nine months in the service came to New York, got shore leave, and never returned. He married about 180l, Mary Raven, twenty-eight years his junior and in 1806 bought land and settled in the town of Antwerp. More than 100 years later the land was still in the possession of his descendnats. His second son, James Mills Bethel, married in 1830 at Antwerp , Martha Powers Wood, daughter of Abner (5) Benjamin(4) James (3) James (2) Henry(1) and Rebecca DAVIS Wood and moved to Milwaukee Wisc. in 1844
